Lion or Lamb?

When it comes to interest rates at least, it appears March may live up to the old adage, “in like a lion and out like a lamb”. Inflation readings during the end of February and beginning of March came in higher than expected, pushing 10-year treasury rates up significantly to the 4% level. As a result of the high inflation and hawkish comments from the Federal Reserve, the market had priced in the potential for a 1/2 percent rate hike for the upcoming Fed meeting on March 22nd.

The collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank on March 10th, the fear of contagion, and the subsequent responses from the FDIC and US Treasury has quickly reversed the trend for treasury rates, with the 10-year currently yielding 3.4%. The market is now re-evaluating the direction of future Fed policy, and some analysts are even factoring in the slight possibility of a rate cut on March 22nd, a dovish (or would that be lambish) stance indeed. Now if we can just get our weather to cooperate.
